Just a quick reminder that, starting on April 10, 2026, the European Union will roll out the new Entry/Exit System (EES) at the external borders of the Schengen Area.
In simple terms, passport stamps will be replaced by a digital system that records when non-EU travelers enter and leave the Schengen Area. The system will store passport details, travel dates, and certain biometric data (such as fingerprints and a facial image).
The goal is to make border checks smoother while also keeping better track of how long travelers stay in the Schengen Area. For example, visitors from visa-exempt countries such as the United States and Canada can currently stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. The new system is designed to automatically monitor and enforce these limits more accurately.
This change is part of a broader update to European travel rules, which also includes ETIAS, a travel authorization expected to be introduced later in 2026. While ETIAS will be required before traveling, EES will handle registration at the border.
