Over the next two years, travel to Europe will change significantly with the rollout of two new EU systems: the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). Together, they will modernize border control, enhance security, and streamline the travel process for millions of visitors.
Entry/Exit System (EES)
What is the EES?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new EU border-control tool designed to replace manual passport stamps with a digital record of each traveler’s entry and exit. It launches on October 12, 2025, with full rollout expected by April 10, 2026.
Who will be affected?
- Citizens of non-EU countries (including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia);
- Travelers making short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
How does it work?
At border checks, travelers will:
- Provide biometric data (a facial scan and fingerprints);
- Have their entry and exit dates recorded;
- Receive a digital record instead of a passport stamp.
Travelers will also be able to check how many days they have left in their 90/180-day allowance. An official online EES portal is in development for this purpose.
Who is exempt?
- EU citizens and residents;
- Holders of long-stay visas or residence permits;
- Nationals of Andorra, San Marino, Monaco, and the Vatican;
- Diplomats, cross-border workers, and some train crews.
Rollout period (Oct 2025 – Apr 2026)
- Some borders may still stamp passports temporarily;
- Biometric collection may not start everywhere at once;
- Travelers may encounter slightly different procedures depending on the border crossing.
European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is the EU’s new pre-travel authorization system for visa-exempt travelers, similar to the US’s ESTA. It is not a visa, but it will be mandatory from Spring 2027 (launching late 2026, with a grace period).
Who will need it?
- Citizens of more than 60 visa-exempt countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia;
- Visitors traveling to these 30 European countries (all Schengen states plus Cyprus);
- Tourists, family visitors, second-home owners, and short-term business/work travelers.
Carriers will be required to check ETIAS before departure. Boarding without a valid authorization may result in denial of travel.
Key facts
- Fee: €20 (ages 18–70);
- Exemptions: Children under 18, adults over 70, and certain family members of EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (application still required, but free)
- Validity: Up to 3 years, or until passport expiry;
- Processing: Most approvals within minutes; up to 30 days in complex cases.
Exemptions from ETIAS
- EU citizens and dual citizens traveling on their EU passport;
- EEA/Swiss citizens and some family members;
- Holders of valid EU/Schengen residence permits.
Denials and criminal history
If refused, revoked, or annulled, ETIAS records stay in the EU system for five years. Serious criminal offenses may lead to denial, but every case is reviewed individually.
Watch out for scams
Only apply via the official EU portal (.europa.eu). Fraudulent websites already charge inflated fees or falsely promise early access.
Bottom Line
- EES begins in October 2025 (and will be fully in place by April 2026). It digitizes border crossings and replaces passport stamps with biometric and digital records.
- ETIAS follows in late 2026, becoming mandatory in Spring 2027. It costs €20, is valid for three years, and must be obtained online before departure.
Together, these systems add an extra planning step for travelers but are designed to make Europe’s borders more efficient and secure.
Traveler’s Checklist
- Check your passport — it must be valid for the duration of your stay.
- From Oct 2025: Be prepared for biometric scans (EES) at Schengen borders.
- From Spring 2027: Apply for ETIAS online before travel (allow time for processing).
- Budget €20 for ETIAS if you’re between 18–70 years old.
- Avoid scams — only use the official EU website (ending in .europa.eu).
- If in doubt: Ask border officers how many days you have left under the 90/180-day rule, or check online once the EES portal is available.
