Digital Nomad Visa

It’s here. After two years of will she or won’t she – Italy has signed its Digital Nomad and Remote Worker decree into law.

Effective as of April 5, 2024, the new decree is the work of four Italian ministries (Interior, Tourism, Foreign Affairs and Labor).

Designed for professional non-EU citizens, the digital nomad visa permits remote working – allowing entry into Italy for up to 12 months.

Considerably simplifying the immigration process – there is no work permit requirement and digital nomads are not part of the annual self-employed and employee quotas.

The application for the visa is made with your local Italian Consulate. As with all visa applications, you must bring a valid passport.

Also keep in mind that consulates have discretion on visa requisites.

What are the requirements?

  • This visa is for non-EU citizens working for or with a company based outside of Italy;
  • With the ability to work digitally;
  • The work must be recognized as highly qualified;
  • If not a freelancer, the applicant must have a highly qualified employment contract;
  • College or university degree (of more than 3 years) or at least 5 years of professional experience;
  • Minimum income: Euro 28,000 (approximately USD 30,000) (from various demonstrable sources, not only employment);
  • Health insurance covering medical expenses and hospital stays – valid in Italy for the duration of your stay;
  • Proof of accommodation ;
  • At least 6 months of previous experience as a digital nomad or remote worker;
  • Affidavit from the employer or self – if a freelancer – certifying the absence of criminal charges in the last five years.

What happens once I get the visa, and arrive in Italy?

Within 8 working days from entering Italy, the digital nomad visa must be converted to a residency permit. This request is made with the local Questura (police station).

Bringing the same documentation you presented at the Consulate, you will be granted a digital nomad/remote worker permit.

Once you have received your residency permit, you will receive a codice fiscale (tax code) and will be required to request a VAT (value added tax) number from the tax agency.

How long is it valid?

The digital nomad visa is valid for 12 months and can be renewed every year as long as the conditions for receiving the initial visa have not changed.

Can I bring my family?

Yes. Family members (spouse and minor children) can be issued a residency permit for the same duration as the digital nomad.
